3d Architectural renderings developed as part of the Philippe Barriere Design Collective (PB+Co).
Project Background
Selected project for the HOME House Project Competition organized by SECCA (Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art). The traveling component of the Home House Project Show on affordable housing is presently exhibited at SECCA and traveling around the country.
Philosophical Setting
Original forms of architecture will be found not in the creation of a new arbitrary formalism but on a basis of critical thinking with profound understanding of the living processes and their translation in to architectural form and with the use of new materials and new technology applied to construction processes. Architecture is a political statement.
Ideological Concept
The prototype concept challenges current attitudes and political practices responsible for our cultural suburbanization and its aggravation. It reflects the desire to create socially responsible communities with an environmental ethos. The idea is to converge the scatter remnants and residual land ?vacancies? mapped by the uneven contours of a disassembled suburbia, to reclaim them as Ready-made Parks and, finally, to recycle the undefined ?greenways?, which will constitute inhabitable wooded Public Parks: Parkurbia. In Parkurbia compact aero-lightweight vertical dwellings, disengaged from the ground, are morphologically compatible with the reclaimed, re-forested areas. This architecture is part of a strategy of landscape restoration in which home building does not signify an irrevocable appropriation of land, but instead, permits maintenance and fostering of arboreal development while preventing further irreversible landscape absorption. Additionally, it raises the issue of regulating land use as a public property, like air or water, only the home is private.
Architectural Parti
Located within the trees and oriented towards and open vista, function as public common spaces (communal playgrounds, vegetable gardens, etc), these community clearings or commons recreate the reversal of a city park where an open field replaces the planted area. Disengaged from the ground, the house structure has a minimum impact. Open, grassed parking under the dwelling is connected to a main service dirt road. Formal understanding of the architecting is processed within the morphology of the landscape: height and proportions do not exceed that of larger tress found on the site. Energy-saving photovoltaic transparent film on the south-facing glass curtain wall produces enough energy for the sale or trading of surpluses during the day for energy credits at night (as energy storage is not yet a possibility). The translucence of the skin allows filtered natural light within the dwelling. Use of recyclable materials when possible, compactness, and efficiency of space design prevent the waste of material and space.
